NEMA 4 requirement - salt water proximity

NEMA 4 requirement - salt water proximity

(OP)
I'm a little out of my element on this, so any handholding the group can offer would be helpful.

I have a project where NEMA may require a Type 4 enclosure due to proximity to salt water. I've been told that the proximity limit is 10 miles, meaning if the project is within 10 miles of a body of salt water, that it will require NEMA 4 enclosures.

Q1: Does that sound right? Seems excessive,
Q2: What counts as a body of salt water? Ocean? What about bays that may be somewhat brackish? Where is the cutoff, or code definition, for 'salt water'?

Thanks in advance. I don't really have access to these codes to dig the information up myself.

Project is a solar farm, so the cost could be significant.

RE: NEMA 4 requirement - salt water proximity

NEMA 4 is pretty much the standard for outdoor industrial applications that do not have salt air exposure. For salt air, probably should go with NEMA 4X. I would consider a (commercial) solar farm an industrial application.

As to what constitutes salt water, that is going to be a judgment call - depends on the local geography. On the South Carolina coast, what could be considered "salt water" can be a long way from the ocean. What is your area like?
