Flame Cutting to remove temporary attachments

Flame Cutting to remove temporary attachments

Flame Cutting to remove temporary attachments

(OP)
Hi Everyone,

Is there a provision in the ASME VIII code that prohibits flame cutting as a procedure to remove welding connecting the temporary attachments such as lifting lugs to the shell or head plate of a pressure vessel?

Appreciate any response.

Thanks.

RE: Flame Cutting to remove temporary attachments

Nothing that prohibits this in Section VIII, Div. 1.

The section below could be used as a reference.

UG-76 CUTTING PLATES AND OTHER STOCK
(a) Plates, edges of heads, and other parts may be cut to shape and size by mechanical means such as machining,
shearing, grinding, or by oxygen or arc cutting. After oxygen or arc cutting, all slag and detrimental discoloration of
material which has been molten shall be removed by mechanical means prior to further fabrication or use.
