Shear check for flat slab transfer slab.

Shear check for flat slab transfer slab.

Shear check for flat slab transfer slab.

(OP)
Hello,

In Australia, most builders prefer flat slab with drop panels to slab with wide(band) beams. In one of my recent project, the client has asked if flat slab is adequate for the transfer slab of a lower rise apartment. My question is: under what situation 'beam shear' need to be checked over a column?

If the transfer slab has been checked OK with punching shear, but failed with 'beam shear', can we use shear studs as shear reinforcement, or use closed ties to create a hidden beam inside drop panel/slab? Would wide beams be more practical for transfer slabs?

Thanks,
Ting

RE: Shear check for flat slab transfer slab.

Tons of good info in this thread: Link. You could use rails or ties and I don't believe that wide would be any better with regard to the one-way shear issue.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
