thread507-155566: Mobile Crane Outrigger Pad Loads

Hello Experts,

I am trying to analyze the outrigger beams for a mobile crane in ANSYS WB. I have the load data for rated condition. I have considered some portion of carrier and constrained it in all DOFs. The contacts between the carrier and outrigger beams at wear pad locations are all non linear. The extension cylinder of the outrigger beam is modeled with beam element with rotational DOFs released so that it takes only axial loads.

The load is applied at the outrigger float location.

However, when I complete the analyze and look at the results, the stresses at the contacting locations of wear pads appear to be extremely high. Also, the stresses in other parts of outrigger appear to be more than the allowable limit. I did the hand calculation for a typical cross section. The hand calculated stresses don't appear to match the FEA stresses.

My question is, Is my modeling approach correct? Is there any other better way of simulating the outriggers?

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Prasad
