Preferred Fire Water Pump

Preferred Fire Water Pump

Preferred Fire Water Pump

Hi
I would like some pros and cons between two different fire water pumps.
I know a lot about the submersible pump, and it is a really good alternative as a fire water pump for FPSOs and other floating production units offshore. However, US Operators/Contractors seem to prefer a vertical line-shaft pump, which I don't know a lot about. I would like some help with pros and cons between these two and in which cases one of them is preferred over the other.

RE: Preferred Fire Water Pump

The use of VTP's could be based on fire protection standards. This is the first step you need to take in understanding WHY.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

RE: Preferred Fire Water Pump

By submersible, do you mean electric drive?

Fire pumps by design are normally direct driven self contained diesel units which will run to destruction without external sources of power, controls, switchgear, cables etc, all of which might be vulnerable in the event of fire or explosion.

The direct drive bit is probably what leans you towards the vertical line pump.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Actually, right now I am looking at the hydraulic drive submersible pump in comparison to a Vertical Line Shaft when it comes to availability and maintenace. It is for use offshore as fire water pump. I mostly need input on the vertical line shaft pump, in both pros and cons as I do not know enough about it

RE: Preferred Fire Water Pump

Will repeat what has already been stated- fire pumps are usually designed and supplied to a fire pump standard. Can't see any point in spinning wheels on pro's and con's until the requirement or not is established regarding any standard.

thanks, I will check them out

RE: Preferred Fire Water Pump

Most fire pumps are certified by Factory Mutual. Factory Mutual has not certified a hydraulically drive submersible pump for this service.

The certified pumps may be found on the Factory Mutual site.

RE: Preferred Fire Water Pump

The use of hydraulic submersible or vertical line shaft pumps depends on where it is installed and cost. On semisubmersible platforms, hydraulic submersible pumps are used where vertical line shaft pumps and horizontal direct driven pumps cannot be installed. On fixed platforms, vertical line shaft pumps are specified because of cost compared to hydraulic submersible pumps. On FPSO either engine driven horiziontal pumps are used installed in engine room or horizontal hydraulic motor driven pump installed in hull with engine driven horizontal pump in series with hydraulic motor driven pump installed on deck. Same engine drive hydraulic pump. So fire pump type for offshore is based on application and cost.
