CULVERT BRIDGE DESIGN IN THE DESERT

CULVERT BRIDGE DESIGN IN THE DESERT

CULVERT BRIDGE DESIGN IN THE DESERT

(OP)
With no access to HydroCADD and other modeling devices, how do you determine the concrete depth and strength of the concrete rebars to support two or three of these 6ft wide box culverts to be installed side in a place that flood a few ties a year? It looks like in the absence of tools one may have to overdesign the slab and the depth of road over the culvert in a desert environment overseas. I cannot get numbers to plug into any equations and calculate anything. Is there a rule of thumb for how much Wingwall and Headwall to allow for a 6ft box CULVERT? This is like a culvert bridge and should be able to support 20 ton vehicles.

RE: CULVERT BRIDGE DESIGN IN THE DESERT

If this was in the US the AASHTO LRFD specifications for bridge design is where you'll go for the structural calculations of the culvert and wing walls. But since you say overseas I have no idea what the governing code would be.

RE: CULVERT BRIDGE DESIGN IN THE DESERT

One rough rule on depth of foundations is that they extend below invert equal to height of flood above invert, to avoid scour undermining.

Search some DOT websites, NYSDOT & Caltrans have standard designs. There's also ASTC C1577 but it only covers the box.
