Anyone know how can I embed reinforcement in TNO iDiana using beam element?
They have a manual ConcMass but it gives only example of plane stress element with embedded reinforcement.

https://support.tnodiana.com/manuals/d944/ElmLib/n... I found this link but i didnt understand it. What command should I use?

RE: TNO Diana

Beam elements are trickier to use since both the bar mesh and the concrete mesh must have the same nodes. I have done this before for a variety of reasons. Why are you not using embedded rebar? Maz has a youtube video that shows that procedure.

That video is blurred. I couldnt follow the video. Can you provide me the procedure of assigning reinforcement in solid or beam element. I have find the manual ConcMass and it has an example of embedded reinforcement in plane stress element. what do you mean by embedded rebar? In TNO iDiana I select reinforcement and reinforcement bonded. And for physical property I select embedded reinforcement bar.

Can you please tell me the procedure to put reinforcement in beam or solid element?

RE: TNO Diana

One can use beam elements to represent rebar, but then the nodes must align. We do this to represent non-circular composite fiber bars. Here it seems you are trying to model typical rebar. We use FXplus, so I cannot help that much with the iDiana code.

RE: TNO Diana

Why do you want to embed rebar? Why not adjust the solid properties to match the composite properties of the section?

Thankyou Brad805. :)

IDS I want to model a simply supported reinforced beam and see what are the stresses in concrete and reinforcement at specific load.
For that reason, I am trying to model the reinforcement. I used iDiana and made beam using plane stress element and put embedded reinforcement in it. The result of stress in reinforcement does not match with manual calculation but it does match for concrete.

So I decided to use beam element or solid element in iDiana. But I could not find any procedure to model the reinforced beam as a line element or solid element. :(

So now I have made beam using plane stress element in FX+, but after importing post neutral DPB file, Error occurs stating that element number 2402 is not found in the model. I have 2400 elements in the model. i don't know which element 2402 it is using. :(

Now I am making beam as solid with embedded reinforcement. I am following the video on YouTube.. but it is very unclear. I didnt follow what the user has done in Mesh Editor because I could not see what parameters it is taking. After running analysis on Diana. I import the post neutral DPB file the same error comes i.e element number 131 is not found in the model. :(

RE: TNO Diana

The point is that generating a model or reinforced concrete that will behave like real reinforced concrete is actually very difficult. It's not just a matter of embedding the steel in the right location. You have to find a way to model the bending behaviour after the concrete cracks, with the concrete taking no tension, but still transferring shear forces.

It is much easier to use beam elements to calculate the bending moments, then do section analysis in the usual way to calculate steel stresses.

RE: TNO Diana

IDS, I assume he will do a NL analysis with this model using one of the concrete material models. Diana has approx ten different material models to deal with concrete post cracking strength. Deciding which one is appropriate is another problem.

This is a silly question, but I assume you are importing both the concrete and rebar results after your analysis? You need to import a .dpb and .dmb file. I hope some of these steps are simplified in the next release due fairly soon. By the way, if you are a client of TNO Diana their help team is very good. They have created several tutorials for us.

Are you trying to model bondslip? If so, you will need to define the extra parameters as Maz shows in the video. If not, you can skip those steps. The DSTIFF value and profile parameters he edits in the mesh editor are only related to bondslip.

RE: TNO Diana

OK, so it seems that Diana has pretty good concrete models. It also has manuals available on line, including details of how to attach reinforcement to beam elements:
https://support.tnodiana.com/manuals/d96/ElmLib/no...

Also see:
https://support.tnodiana.com/content/DIANA-White-P...

For a simply supported beam analysis I suggest that using beam elements would be by far the easiest way to go, at least for a start. I'd suggest looking at the white papers on embedded reinforcement and prediction of crack widths, which also has details of using reinforcement with plate elements.

You might also like to have a look at:
http://vm.civeng.unsw.edu.au/uniciv/R-393.pdf
which covers the use of Diana with 20 node brick elements to model punching shear in a slab.

Thankyou Brad805 and IDS

I was not importing the .dmb file which was causing the error. Also I am not considering the bondslip, so it means I dont have to follow what Maz has done in Mesh Editor.
Thank you IDS, I didnt knew about the White papers. I will surely try to use beam elements as mentioned in the link (BAR in Beam)

RE: TNO Diana

Watch for the next webinar that TNO puts on. http://tnodiana.com/content/Online-Training Dr. Maziar Partovi (Maz) is usually the speaker and they are quite helpful. If you can, plan to go to the next concrete training course. I did, and it was very useful. That said, it takes a long time to learn the software.

Thank you Brad805

Can you please tell me how can I extract bending moment diagram of solid beam?
I have seen one of Maz video on youtube. But I am using the older version and it son't have composed 1D line element option?
Is there any other option available from which I can see the moment values?

Thankyou
