Extending Partial Depth Bearing Stiffeners to Opposite Flange

Extending Partial Depth Bearing Stiffeners to Opposite Flange

Extending Partial Depth Bearing Stiffeners to Opposite Flange

(OP)
I have an existing interior column with a crane bracket on one side of the column. There are bearing stiffeners in the column web that line up with the flanges of the bracket and are flush to the flange to which the bracket is attached. The stiffeners are nearly the full depth of the column but stop 1/4" short of the opposite flange. The owner would now like to add a crane bracket on the opposite side of the column at exactly the same height as the original bracket. What would be a good method to extend the existing stiffeners 1/4" to flange supporting the new crane bracket? Considered adding a backer plate and building out with weld or adding plates on either side of the existing stiffeners and weld to flange, web, and existing stiffeners. Is there a better option I am missing? I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

RE: Extending Partial Depth Bearing Stiffeners to Opposite Flange

The filling of the gap will just result in a complete penetration weld. Probably best to use backing plates so that the structural weld can be done all from the top.
