A Change in weld progression using GTAW

A Change in weld progression using GTAW

A Change in weld progression using GTAW

(OP)
As per ASME IX

QW-405.3 - A change from upward to downward, or from downward to upward, in the progression specified for any pass of a vertical weld, except that the cover or wash pass may be up or down.

I understood that a change in weld progression is a nonessential variable but my question with regard to the statement above is:

What is meant by "except that the cover or wash pass may be up or down."?
Does it refer to the weld capping?

Thank you in advance.

RE: A Change in weld progression using GTAW

Yes.

RE: A Change in weld progression using GTAW

It is an essential variable for the Welders' qualification.

RE: A Change in weld progression using GTAW

with the further exemptions permitted by QW-405.3.

RE: A Change in weld progression using GTAW

I'm unfamiliar with the term "weld capping", but I take "washing" to mean going over the weld with the GTAW arc but without filler metal, usually for cosmetic reasons.
