Zincated Steel Sheets for the Casing of an AC Machine

Zincated Steel Sheets for the Casing of an AC Machine

(OP)
Greetings

I came across HVAC air-handler specifications that describe the outer part of the unit casing made from 'zincated steel sheets'. I never came across zincated steel before but I understand so far that it has something to do with nickel plating and nothing to do with protecting the steel from corrosion like galvanizing/galvannealing. Can someone shed a little light on this subject in this context please?

Zincating is a term used sometimes by non-English speaking people to refer to processes that produce zinc-rich coatings (electrolytic or non-electrolytic). If you want to know exactly what the material and process are, you will need to ask your source.

So that would mean 'zincating' is a vague term that could possibly be referring to galvanizing.

That is my experience

A 'zincate solution' in normally an alkali solution made from dissolving zinc, zinc oxide or zinc hydroxide and contain Zn(OH)42− anions which are known as tetrahydroxozincate.

Gumm's Bondal for example contains this material and is commonly used as a preparation for chrome plating aluminium.

The process of preparing aluminium for plating with metals such as chrome, gold or other relatively noble metals is commonly referred to as zincating. In some cases the substrate is double 'zincated' which means the first layer is dissolved to remove all traces of 'smut' and then the coating reapplied to enhance adhesion.

There are many well written articles available.

I have never heard the expression 'zincated' referred to a zinc coated steel and can only agree that this is an error from someone who does not have a complete grasp of technical English.

Not really the end of the world as a basic examination of the steel sheet should reveal how it was processed.

There are many much worse errors of language made on a regular basis - Nitrating for example when parts are clearly nitrided is another classic error.

As all Nitrates are soluble in aqueouss solutions anyone making this basic error clearly doesn't have much of a grasp of the subject but possibly this is just something I don't like much bigsmile

I occasionally specify nitrited parts for use in submarines. They are easily identified by their deep pink color and delicious, salty flavor pig
