I want to replace stayed aluminum mast (as stated in a plan) with diy unstayed wooden hollow mast to rig a junk type sail. Can anybody advice what diameter the mast shoud have, provided it must be somewhere in 12 meters (36 foot) lenght. Any information or link to appropriate site very welcome. Shermick

Try "Skenes Elements of Yacht Design", out of print, but one of the best references for Naval Architecture. It should have some basic guidelines. Now why would one want to do such a thing is another issue.

Perhaps www.harryproa.com.  Rob uses an unstayed carbon mast.  He does custom design work.

Also think about a wood/carbon mast.
