CONCRETE MASONRY ARCH THRESHOLD

CONCRETE MASONRY ARCH THRESHOLD

CONCRETE MASONRY ARCH THRESHOLD

(OP)
Is there a limit to how long of a masonry opening you can have before crossing a "failure threshold" for a masonry lintel?

In the case where you have a 24’ tall CMU wall, with a 12’ wide x 12’ high rough opening, if one would consider the arching effect, you could technically have 5’-4” of “load transferable masonry structure” above the “arch”. Alternately, if the opening were only 8’ high, the “load transferable masonry structure” would be 9’-4” above the “arch” zone.

I personally am not comfortable with either scenario. But, the premise of my question remains - is there a threshold or a maximum span when considering arching action for concrete masonry lintels? It may be a beneficial consideration, or limitation, in the future.

Thank you all!

RE: CONCRETE MASONRY ARCH THRESHOLD

The limit for the width of opening would have to take into account the capacity of what is left of the wall each side of the opening to resist the horizontal thrust.
