Electrical Power PE Exam study material

Electrical Power PE Exam study material

(OP)
Hello!!!!

I finally received confirmation that I will be taking the Power PE exam this fall ( October 2015)
Can anyone tell me what code books and study material I should be looking to buy?
I'm guessing I will be needing the NEC 2014 and was going to buy the study packet from ppi2pass.com
any advise to help me pass this exam is welcome.

thank you

RE: Electrical Power PE Exam study material

I successfully used material from pp2pass.com

RE: Electrical Power PE Exam study material

I suggest the following code books
1) NFPA 70-2014 NEC Handbook
2) NFPA 70-E 2015 Electrical Safety Handbook
3) IEEE C2-2012 National Electric Safety Code (NESC) Handbook

I like the handbooks myself they have the code plus code interpretations by the author.
I took my PE 39 years ago, boy time flies. Slide rules and calculators were allowed back then. Had to wait almost 6 months for the results.
Hope this helps and good luck;
Dave

ps: If I can think of anything else, I will post it.

RE: Electrical Power PE Exam study material

While the code books are full of information, they make for very boring reading. Memorizing a bunch of codes may help with some questions on the PE exam but the exam mostly demands your mathematics and critical thinking. What I found is best are the study guides (They weren't called ppi2pass when I took the exam). Starting 2 months before the exam, work out two or three of the problems every other evening. The exam is full of many problems which take about 45min-to 1hour each. After 2 months of this, your mind will be tuned in to quickly solve these types of problems.

What I'm mean is, know how to use the use the code books and where to find the answer in the books. When I took exam, you needed NFPA 70 NEC for one question only and only allowed 10 minutes to get the answer. The question was simple question but where to find the answer. I believe the question was, how many amps allowed for 1 sq inch of cu and al bus bar. answer cu 1000Amp al 700Amp Answer found in Art.366.23(A) Auxilliary Gutters.
I know things have changed a lot in 39 years.
Again, good luck with the exam.

I'm late to the party, but would study guide from 1975 be of any value today? It is a set of IIRC about 8 hardback books. I would send it to someone who could use it for just the shipping cost...

RE: Electrical Power PE Exam study material

I would use the study guides recommended by National Association of Professional Engineers . The secret is to take three weeks off from your job. Just study 8 hours a day, five days a week and don't study the day before the test. This should clear your head of work related data in your memory and get use to the 8 hour exam time period and help focus on the PE exam. All your Engineering classes will just kick in and you should be able to pass the exam.

As for the NEC code there is every little questions about that maybe 10 percent of questions if any. If you don't know the code now is not the time to learn it. Choose other questions if possible. Remember- the guys that make these exams are professors in college that don't usually know the code. They are not guys working in the field. So the exam is academic problems from engineering text books. I would suggest using and reviewing your Engineering text books you already have.

Good luck

You can buy a practice book directly from NCEES.org
