Opening in Existing One-Way Elevated Concrete Slab

Opening in Existing One-Way Elevated Concrete Slab

Opening in Existing One-Way Elevated Concrete Slab

(OP)
I am working on a project that will have an approximate opening 8'x12' in an existing elevated one-way concrete slab. I will be putting in dropped steel beams around the opening to support the existing slab and designing reinforcement as needed for the adjacent spans (that not longer have continuity). The building was built ~1910. The slab is 8" thick.

To me it seems like a good idea to be a closure angle (say 8x4) at the cut edge of the slab to prevent spalling of the concrete at the edge and to protect the cut edge of the reinforcing steel. I'm not sure if this is common or not. Do you typically put in a similar angle?

Thoughts?

RE: Opening in Existing One-Way Elevated Concrete Slab

Is your concrete matrix in particularly poor shape? Is there vehicular floor traffic in the area (though I doubt they would be driving over the edge of the opening!)? Is there a grating or floor plate covering the opening? If this is just a static opening, with none of the above, your edge angle seems like overkill to me. This is assuming, of course, that you have already dealt with the load distribution effects of a large hole in the floor diaphragm
