Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

(OP)
Is it recommended to use Super Austenitic (high in Cr and Ni but not Mo)Stainless Steel in place of DSS ? Assuming a system with high chlorides.

RE: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

You need more information - temperature, pH and chloride content. Once you have these process parameters, there is plenty of literature to review to make a choice.

RE: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

(OP)
Assume a Chloride content of 140000ppm, pH2S of 9 mbar, Temp. = 70degC, pH = 5

Is PREN No. enough to make a choice ?

RE: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

There is no DSS that will stand up under those conditions.
Ni based Ni-Mo-Cr or Ni-Cr-Mo will be needed.

Mo is how you make superaustinitic alloys, they are all 6 -7% Mo, it is critical to their corrosion resistance.

RE: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

Neither DSS nor super austenitic stainless steels are acceptable. See metengr & EdStainless.

A182 F20, A182 F56 have high nickel but less than 6Mo. Are they not considered super austenitic ?

Can these be used for DSS ?

RE: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

No. F20 is a super austenitic stainless steel, F56 is considered a duplex stainless steel.

RE: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

(OP)
I believe, F56 has 31& Nickel and is listed under Austenitic Stainless Steel in A182 however I will recheck.

but my question here is sir, whether F20 being super austenitic can be used for Duplex Stainless Steel as it has only 2-3% Mo.

RE: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel vs DSS

F20 is alloy 20, very good in sulfuric acid service, but not suitable for high Cl applications.
