Hi everyone
Background:
I am designing a ASME Sec VIII-1 spherical pressure vessel of diameter 12.5 meters and thickness 34mm.
Question:
Is it permitted to design vessel on lugs in such a way that lugs(not legs) can be placed on civil columns/pillars as per civil design.
My aim is to omit the legs and other steel structural weight from vessel.

Kindly suggest, if you have any project done or have any knowledge, do share with me.

Yes Adeeba, you can design the mentioned sphere on lugs, provided to limit the stress on shell. For a sphere of 12.5 m dia, I would use a support ring at the 'equator' to absorb the excessive stresses.

Look carefully at the picture on this webpage....

Note the leg cross braces in the pictures for virtually all designs...... your support lugs and concrete pillars must incorporate features for similar cross-brace attachments.

Personally, if you consider the complication of the cross braces and the accuracy issues with concrete pillars, I believe that you would be better serves with the more traditional steel pipe support legs. It may be cheaper, in the long run, to stick with convention.

You must consider also the complex spiral stairs and ramp to get the top of the sphere.

What will be in the vessel ?
