Lifting Padeye on I-Beam

Lifting Padeye on I-Beam

Lifting Padeye on I-Beam

(OP)
Hi All,

I am designing a structure with a final load of 25 tonnes. While I have designed lifting padeyes in the past where padeyes have been slotted through tubes (circular, square, and rectangular). This case is the padeye is to be welded on a I-Beam, but instead of just welding it with a full penetration weld on the upper flange, I want the padeye to be slotted to give it extra strength in the joint (welding on top and bottom flange).
1. Can you please advise what will be a better way to slot a padeye to the structure? There are 4 lifting padeyes in each corner.
2. Also, what effect will the welding joint have on the thin web of the I-beam when the 25 tonne structure is lifted?
3. Any other option where we can have redundancy in the padeye joint?
Attached picture for reference.

Thanks,
HD

RE: Lifting Padeye on I-Beam

I would just stick with welding the padeye to the top flange, over the web. If that doesn't work by the numbers somehow, pick a beam with a thicker web. The slotted detail will be expensive and I'm not sure that it adds anything meaningful to your capacity.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Lifting Padeye on I-Beam

A bolted connection would likely give you the most redundancy

RE: Lifting Padeye on I-Beam

To increase the weld joint length to the top flange of the I-beam, buy a rated padeye instead of slotting the I-beam and machining the complex insert and fillet welding (?) all around the insert.

A purchased forged padeye will have an extended base that gives you more weld area to the top I-beam flange.

RE: Lifting Padeye on I-Beam

why slot the flange ? why not "just" cut it off ? I mean, the I-beam shouldn't be doing much bending there ?

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?
