What's the typical process of doing a mechanical structure design?

(OP)
Hi all,

I don't know if this is the best place to ask this question, but I know there are lots of experienced active users on this forum, I really appreciate that if you can offer your opinion or suggestions.

I'm a junior mechanical structure designer, working for a small sport camera company. I don't have a mentor in the company so basically I'm doing most of the work by myself. I'm now working on designing a robust mechanical structure that could easily lock/unlock 2 components by one action--push, meaning you push once it lock, another push it unlock. I tried a couple ways based on my past experience and observation, but didn't work out. I kind of get stuck now, and struggling to find a new structure. So I was wondering if there is a logical and practical process of designing a mechanical structure? WHat's the typical way of doing this in a mature company?I'm open to any constructive suggestions. Thanks very much!
