Verifying grade of a pipeing material from old BOM/drawing

Verifying grade of a pipeing material from old BOM/drawing

(OP)
Hello Guys
I've been registered on the forum for a while but have never really asked question. I hope I can get some help on piping materials verifications. Basically, I have an old drawings and want to verify the grade of the end closer which is described as

- Hinged end closure 12” ASA - 12.75 OD , 400#, WE, MY35,000# x 0.5 WT

I believe this is 35,000 KSI yield strenght material which should be grade 240?

I would be very grateful if someone could verify this.

Sincerely

RE: Verifying grade of a pipeing material from old BOM/drawing

Looks to me like a flange with an SMYS = 35,000 psi = 241 MPa so Grade 241.

Thanks very much Snorgy,
From the drawings, its an end cap (closure). Its 400# tells me its PN68 and its size is NPS12
Yes, I think its grade must be 241

I will also need to calculate the hoop stress level in this end cap. I don`t think I can use the PD/2D formula since its not a pipe but an end cap. What formula do you think is most suitable for calculating the hoop stress in an end cap.

Thanks a lot

Thanks very much SNORGY
I'll use the pressure vessel formula's. I'll head to the office soon to get a head start and do this over the long weekend. I hope you don't mind if I post some more questions as i used the formulas and seek verifications. Basically, I need to hydrostatically test the end caps, thats why I was interested in the hoop stress. I will probably test it to say 90% SMYS as they are old but need to be reused.

Sincerely

Hi again
Thanks so much for your help on this SNORGY. I'm just about done, but want to clarify the that I can hydrostatically test as part of the assembly, some items at say 10,000 kPa test pressure

Gate Valve, 1", 600# - this one is fairly easy and i think the max it can be tested to is 1.5CWP OF ANSI 600. Its the nipple I'm not sure how to ensure that it can be tested to the test pressure I'm specifying

**** Nipple, 1"x 4" Lg, xx-Heavy, SMLS, TOE ********

Pls is there some doc I can pick from and say that a xx-heavy nipple can withstand 10,000 kpa testing?

Sincerely

RE: Verifying grade of a pipeing material from old BOM/drawing

1NPS nipple XXH was 'factory' hydro'd in excess of 3K psi. Burst pressure is in excess of 50K psi. thus 10K kpa is trivial.
for documentation, quote the formula in API 570.
