Dear VoyageofDiscovery (Structural),
I was looking for a solution for a problem that I have and came up with thread 725-41243 started by moonwalker on January 2003.
I saw your response to him and tried to understand it. Is it possible to draw a sketch so I can see what you have suggested?

"These a/b should then be tied together by rectangular bars (?) subjected to shear only from the existing base plate during uplift. The ends of the bars will have a welded collar for the a/b(?)."

I put a question mark where I cannot pic that.
What are rectagular bars? Are they plates? What size?
What are collars?

Thank you

@SKJ25POL: I interpret VoyageofDiscovery's suggestion to be something like what I've shown below. Just my guess.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Dear KootK (Structural),
Thank you so much for making that sketch. It really cleared the mud for me. Tremendous help.

I dont want to be rude and ask more but have you seen my thread:
thread507-373291: Corroded anchor bot at projected portion and thread507-391571: Corroded Anchor Bolt

I am desperately trying to find a detail to add new bolts and haven't found in any book or articles yet. I haven't done these sort of repairs in past.
Do you happen to have something for this problem ?
I can provide more info if needed.

Thank you so much for the sketch you drew.
Sincerely
SKJ25POL (Structural)

RE: VoyageofDiscovery (Structural)

I've been monitoring your threads on this for some time SKJ. The reason that I haven't chimed in is that I truly haven't felt that I've had any suggestions to offer that would improve upon what others have proposed. But, since you asked, I'll toss out a wacky extreme measure or two anyhow. That way I can say that I did my part.

1) Your pier looks large enough that VoyageofDiscovery's option might have legs. If you wanted to, you could use those new anchor bolts to deal with both shear and uplift. The big caveat, however, is whether or not the concrete pier itself can handle the load delivered by the new anchor bolts. Do we know anything about the existing pier concrete strength or reinforcement?

2) Maybe you could shore the structure, demolish the concrete pier, replace the anchor bolts, and cast a new concrete pier around the new anchor bolts. Nutty, I know. I'm only proposing this because I know that you've struggled to find a viable solution and most of your other options are pretty costly too.

KootK (Structural),
Thank you for your response, I am heading to field and will be back on Monday.
We can talk about it further and I will provide the pier information too.

Have a good weekend

RE: VoyageofDiscovery (Structural)

Happy to help SKJ. Enjoy your weekend as well. I'll look forward to some enlightening field data on Tuesday (long weekend up north).

Signious,

We'll be pondering that thought from the deck overlooking the lake with monday morning barley breakfasts.
