deformed shape for beam under static concentrated load

deformed shape for beam under static concentrated load

Hi guys,

First post!
So I'm using Abaqus to model a multi-girder structure under static concentrated load. I am modelling the slab and the girders with solid homogeneous elements, with the concentrated load defined at the intersection of two partitions. I have noticed that the deformed shape of the structure is very discontinuous near the point of application of the load, as you can see in the picture below.

Is this normal or is there any thing I can do to fix it?

Thanks so much! :)

RE: deformed shape for beam under static concentrated load

It's because you've applied a point load so that all the deformation appears to be at that point. Your stresses will also look 'odd' too, being massive at that point. In real life is there a load acting through a pin?

Hi Corus,

Ok that makes a lot of sense! I am more interested in the global behavior of the structure away from the applied load so that should be fine then. In real life I am planning on modeling moving truck loads along the span of the bridge, and that will be loads acting over the area of the tires. Although I am not sure how to make moving traffic loads in Abaqus yet :S Do you have any insight on that?

Thanks again!
