Uneven penetration of Master surface into Slave Surface

Uneven penetration of Master surface into Slave Surface

Uneven penetration of Master surface into Slave Surface

(OP)
Hello,

This mail is written to seek guidance regarding how to control penetration of Master surface into Slave surface for a contact analysis of two Axi-symmetric bodies. The geometry of two bodies is as follows: This configuration is some what similar to one observed in Rolling Element bearings. The surface on the quarter section of circle is defined as master surface because it has higher elastic modulus.

At the end of contact analysis, COPEN plot indicates that Master surface penetrates slave surface unevenly. This is leads to poor definition of contact and the plot of contact pressure along contact edge is not at all smooth.

Contact Pressure plot along contact edge.
So the challenge is to get smooth variation of contact pressure along the contact edge. I am assuming finite sliding, surface to surface contact with automatic initial over closure adjustment and surface smoothing is a right choice for this configuration. I am using 2nd order quad elements. I also tried different mesh sizes with number of elements on Master surface to slave surface ratio varying from 1:1 to 1: 20. As the slave surface is refined, the smoothness in contact pressure variation is reduced. So can somebody guide me on how to ensure uniform penetration of master surface in to slave surface for above highly conforming geometries. Any suggestion on contact formulation or mesh sizes would be appreciated. All the plots are provided in the attached pdf. file
Thank you in advance,

Nik
