Heterogeneous Weld

Heterogeneous Weld

Heterogeneous Weld

(OP)
Hi,

What is the definition of the "Heterogeneous Butt Joint"? I search through the net and find many definitions but none of them clear.

We are welding Armor plates(quenched and tempered, high strength) with austenitic filler(undermatching) and transverse bend tests fails. Because armor plate is too hard and doesn't bend so all the load transfers to the weld seam whine bending process. This leads to uneven bending and failure, i think. Specimen becomes V shape instead of U and breaks.

I want to use longitudinal bend test as an alternative, but there is a condition in ISO 15614-1 which is "for dissimilar metal joints or heterogeneous butt joints in plates" transverse bend tests may be substituted to longitudinal bend tests.

So i need a clear and solid definition from an international standard/code about heterogenous butt weld.

Thanks in advance,

RE: Heterogeneous Weld

The definition can be found in EN ISO 15607 (as is also mentioned in EN ISO 15614-1, according to which one you perform your qualification).

heterogeneous joint: welded joint in which the weld metal and parent material have significant differences in mechanical properties
and/or chemical composition
