Fixing Existing Cable Draped over Round Support

Fixing Existing Cable Draped over Round Support

Fixing Existing Cable Draped over Round Support

(OP)
Hello All!

I have an existing structure consisting of (2) Frames constructed from 10" pipes (see attached, not my design! :)). Currently the 1 3/8" cable is draped over the round pipe horizontal members. An analysis of this as a frictionless pulley has shown the columns are overstressed due to moment at the base. My assumption is that some friction exists because the columns have not failed. My hopeful solution is to fix the cable to the pipe either with some sort of clamp, or clamps in conjunction with added members. I realize that I will need to check the revised tension in the cables and the anchorage etc, but first I'm trying to determine if clamping in this manner is feasible. The force at this location is about 30kip Tension in the cable and if fixed would greatly reduce the moments on the column base.

I am having a hard time finding friction values for cable clamps on a single cable. In addition, generally these clamps are designed for friction on (2) cables such as at an anchor location. I greatly welcome any comments or suggestions!

Thank you!

Dustin

I sincerely apologize for the breach in etiquette noted above and will make sure I reference this accident in the future. Thank you Denial.

As a side note, I have decided to add an additional independent cable to make things more simple and alleviate any liability associated with the existing anchorage and other unknowns.

Another solution we discussed was adding an additional short length of cable below the cross member and clamping the new and existing cables together on both sides.

Thanks again for the responses and I'm still curious if any others have experiences to share with this type of installation.

Thank you,
Dustin
