PQR/WPS for 8-1/2" thick

PQR/WPS for 8-1/2" thick

Hi all,
We may be getting ready to do a project that is roughly 8" thick 516-70 with 3/4" stainless steel cladding. I am just looking to start preparing myself for the requirements. This vessel will be ASME section VIII U-stamped. As far as the PQR/WPS how would one go about making one with the cladding? This PQR/WPS will require PWHT and impact testing. I have not dug into section IX yet but i will. Just wanted to hear from some of the experienced professionals on this site.

RE: PQR/WPS for 8-1/2" thick

For joining clad materials, you need to review QW-217 in Section IX. All of the information is there. It is very straight forward in approach.

RE: PQR/WPS for 8-1/2" thick

You should really consider Div. 2 for this design.

Thank you gentleman for a starting point.

RE: PQR/WPS for 8-1/2" thick

There are two caldding cases to consider with Section IX, (1) if the clad is included in the design calc or (2) if not. If you are using Section VIII Div 1 or Div 2 I would recommend not including the cladding in the design thickness calculations just to be conservative. If cladding in considered in the design thickness calculation then the requirements of Section IX Para QW-217(a) apply. If not, then you can use QW-217(a) or (b).

QW-217(a) highlights:
  • PQR test coupon shall be made using the same P-number base metal, cladding, weld process and filler metal combination to be used in production
  • Base metal thickness is per QW-451
  • Minimum filler metal thickness shall be determined by chemical analysis
  • Tensile and bend tests must be done with full thickness of cladding through reduced section of the specimen
QW-217(b) highlights:
  • Essential and nonessential variables apply to the base metal portion only
  • PQRs do NOT need to be based on cladded coupons
  • The overlay portion of the weld shall be per QW-251.4
