Design code for Ammonium Nitrate melt tank

Please help me with the design code applicable for AN Melt tank.
is it API 650?

RE: Design code for Ammonium Nitrate melt tank

This is your first tank design, correct ?

Selection of the correct design code depends on the operating pressure/temperature of the liquid contained as well as the fire protection and state statutes and laws regarding the tank design.

The design code permits only certain types of materials of construction and defines acceptable welding, fabrication, resting and inspection methods.

A competent engineer responsible for the tank design typically defines all of these things in a purchasing specification that is reviewed by and agreed to with the client.

API-650, AP-620, ASME-VIII, etc. etc and other codes are commonly specified in the purchasing specification

The term "AN Melt tank" is meaningless to the tank fabricator....

Dear MJCronin
greetings!!
I am sorry for not mentioning details as i thought people working in HC industry would be aware of the process parameters. Anyways, its never too late to learn.
Ammonium Nitrate Tank is used to store AN in molten condition. The Tank has atmospheric design pressure and 150 deg Design temperature. The specific gravity of AN is 1.36 and is corrosive in nature. It is kept in horizontal position. It has a diameter of 5.5m and Height of 7 m.
Please suggest the code.

RE: Design code for Ammonium Nitrate melt tank

As MJCronin pointed out, there are many small details to consider. As an example: HORIZONTAL - API 650 cannot be used. API 620 could be used, but is uncommon for horizontal vessels. UL 142 or ASME Section VIII Division 1 are more likely (in the USA).

RE: Design code for Ammonium Nitrate melt tank

Horizontal or vertical tank?
Is tank pressurized? If so, how much?
Is tank carbon steel? If not, what?

The "kept in horizontal position" suggests a horizontal tank, the 5.5m diameter by 7m high suggests a vertical tank.

API-650 is intended specifically for petroleum applications. In the US, it is commonly used for general industrial tanks that do not fall under other codes. It is limited to vertical tanks, and is limited to tanks with gas pressures up to 2.5 psi. Carbon steel and various stainless steel alloys and aluminum construction are included.

API-650 does not suggest details for dealing with various specific non-petroleum products, so any special provisions for storing a given chemical would need to be specified by the customer.

RE: Design code for Ammonium Nitrate melt tank

Still do not understand if this is a vertical or horizontal axis tank... (??!!??)

Suggest that you consider a 304SS/316SS API-650 vertical tank design, designed to 1.4 SG with ample freespace above the design liquid level and a properly sized vent.

You may want to consider a flat side cleanout port as well as a top and side manway.

304/316 SS seems to be an acceptable material...

it is a vertical tank ofcourse. apologies.
design pressure- atmospheric pressure.
material- 304L

RE: Design code for Ammonium Nitrate melt tank

API-650 could be used. Appendix S addresses stainless 304 construction. (Note that determination of which alloy to use, as well as appropriate cleaning or weld finish, are not covered by the standard.)

I was expecting this.
Thank you.
