Hello all
I need a simple procedure or a simple steps to design or selection the following equipments
- shell and tube heat ex-changer
- furnace which heating crude before entering a distillation unit in oil refinery
my work career actually away from this field, but this task needed for post-graduate degree project, so I'm confused about it
I want to ask also about overall heat transfer coefficient (U) at heat ex-changers, is it considered a design parameter which suppose to be calculated during heat ex-changer design procedure, or it can be used as an assessment parameter also? so I can calculate it based on actual process data then compare it with some reference to know current status of heat ex-changer? and if that is true? what is the proper reference can I use?

Next, you need to identify any design constraints. Things like pipe sizes, space/size limitations, cost limitations, applicable code requirements, available materials, codes, etc. A refinery engineer should be able to help you identify what you design constraints will be. (A constraint could also be a requirement, e.g. minimum thickness of metal or insulation.)
Set yourself a plan of how and when you will do various activities, a roadmap if you will.
Once you have your roadmap, you can start designing your heat exchanger. Use your professors as your quality control team and have them check your calculations, if they are unable see if there is an engineer at the refinery that can help.
Regarding the overall heat transfer coefficient 'U', you need to ask yourself what is it? Go back to your Thermo 101/102 notes and ask your professors. For me to expand on 'U' further in this context is borderline the intended scope of these forums regarding homework. All the thermodynamic and fluid dynamic equations you need are in your text books.
