Hi all,

I am doing an study on the stress distribution of mechanically fastened lap joint due to secondary bending (tensile loads) for aluminum (plates) and steel(fastener).

To verify with FEA result, I used Hertzian contact stress. However I am encountering a problem. For a "neat fit" assembly case where the shaft diameter of the fastener is the same as the hole diameter of the plate, Hertzian contact does not work because relative diameter parameter is undefined.

Therefore, I am seeking opinions on how to hand calculate stress distribution for the case of "neat fit"assembly. Are there other contact mechanic approaches that could deal with this problem? Any help would be very much appreciated.
