Hi,
In attached simple sketch, when I dimension the relationship of the two datum holes, is there difference between the sheet #1 and #2?
Alternatively, if I orient the view so that the connecting line of the two holes is horizontal, would it be a better practice?

Thanks.

RE: view orientation

Seems like either was is sufficient.

RE: view orientation

Is -A- either side of the stock thickness? just a guess

Oh yes, as usual, notats.
To me in sheet #1, it looks the horizontal surface is better candidate for a datum.

RE: view orientation

I think sheet 1 is good inspect where as sheet 2 having angular dimension to locate hole locaion seems to be difficult

RE: view orientation

I agree, sht 1. Need to add datum A.
Profile note, is that the case from front to back also? winky smile

RE: view orientation

My practice of 40 years has always been to orient and dimension views following one main priority: How will the part be used? Put another way: What must the part fit?

If the critical dimension for proper fit with mating parts is the absolute distance between the two holes then sht 2 is preferred. If however the horizontal distance between the two holes is the more critical dimension then sht 1 is preferred. This approach usually provides a very clear path to dimensioning and orientation issues.

Hey, thanks to all.

Chris, I don't follow your question about profile note.

CheckerHater, good point.
