web penetrations in composite steel beams - web buckling limit

web penetrations in composite steel beams - web buckling limit

(OP)
Hi, just wanted to get some feedback regarding exceeding the P0 ratio given in the proportioning guidelines of AISC Design Guide 2, I have a relatively long opening in a beam which exceeds the limit of 6.0 imposed by section 3.7.a.2 (or 5.7 a.2 in commentary). Can this limit be exceeded if web stiffeners are provided each side of web and each side of the opening?

With the exception of this ratio, the hole works.

Thanks!

RE: web penetrations in composite steel beams - web buckling limit

My understanding of the opening parameter is purely to make sure your opening dimensions fit within the parameters against which the procedures are verified against, either real world testing or FEA analysis. So adding stiffeners wouldn't help in this respect. You may find the limits are there to protect against another failure mode which isn't explicitly checked.

Basically you need a smaller opening.

Design guide 2 is fairly old advice, if you want something more recent I would recommend the UK SCI guide P355.
