Question on load and resistance factors

Question on load and resistance factors

Question on load and resistance factors

(OP)
I'm designing a small detail for a structure. Now, instead of doing days of FEA to save a few pounds of steel, I'm just going to design it for the yield strength of the steel it attaches to. Should I factor the force from the steel yielding and the resistance of the steel? Or for ASD, should I size the member such that allowable stress isn't exceeded in the member I'm designing when the nominal yield stress of the connecting member is reached?

RE: Question on load and resistance factors

I'd match capacities of the members involved. Nominal to nominal for LRFD; allowable to allowable for ASD. I feel that this is one of those things that would be much more rationally done in LRFD.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Question on load and resistance factors

This "size the member such that allowable stress isn't exceeded"

A good rational approach. I have engineers in my office that would spend $800 in engineering time modeling something just to save $100 of steel.

When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.
