Hello again all,

Re thread1528-368459: Ascending & Working Aloft On a Ship's Mast - No Halyards Available

If you want to see where I volunteer, here's your chance!

Our local television station has posted a story about how our "captain" arranged to have some of the work completed. There was more I would have recommended we do, but as I expected when he made his plans he did not consult me, therefore only what it was his pleasure to see done got addressed [yes, we have issues].

Unfortunately I cannot alter the fact that if you choose to view the story at http://barrie.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=631066 you will have to watch an advertisement first; feel free to mute the sound during the ad.

Oops!

Forgot to post link to main engine going on kinetic display; this http://barrie.ctvnews.ca/s-s-keewatin-fires-up-its... is it.

The only thing that continues to gall me and always will is the 'fires up its engine' part, which in my view is all marketing hyperbole / smoke and mirrors, and far too suggestive of an internal-combustion engine.

End of mini-rant.

RE: Follow-up re: Working Aloft On a Ship's Mast

"Fires up" is descended from wood and coal "fired" engines, so it seems wholly appropriate to me.

RE: Follow-up re: Working Aloft On a Ship's Mast

So if the boilers were taken out, what is the engine "running" on, compressed air?

You are judged not by what you know, but by what you can do.

RE: Follow-up re: Working Aloft On a Ship's Mast

At the end of the video they disclose the fact that it was 'running' on electricity, so I assume that the engine was simply being turned-over by an electrical motor driving the main crank assembly.

Thanks for the update crshears. I was wondering last week how you had been progressing with the problem.
I like your "Out of the Box" solution.

See, I told you that telescopic boom lifts could be had cheaply!

Thanks for posting. I'll be driving up the 400 in a month. Cool to see the Red Ensign of 1921–1957 flying again.

I strongly recommend visiting on a Thursday as this is the Engineering group members' chosen common work day; ask for Marv, John, Dave or Carl.

JohnRBaker is correct; kinetic display motion is achieved via single-phase-power-supplied VFD driving a 40HP 3-phase motor using the original barring/turning gear mechanism, but with the original steam barring engine removed.
