h/L Ratio for Open Buildings

h/L Ratio for Open Buildings

h/L Ratio for Open Buildings

(OP)
Hey guys,

I am working on the preliminary design for a canopy that would be placed on top of like a parking garage.

I was just wondering, Normally I would use something like ASCE 7-05 figure 6-18A for MWFRS Wind Loads, and 6-19A for C&C Windloads.

When calculating the h/L ratio, h is the the mean height of the canopy off the ground. And L is the length of the canopy measured in the windward direction, correct?

Say the top deck of the parking garage is 50' off the ground.
"h" for the canopy might then be like 58',
"L" might be like 13',
h/L would be 4.46.

4.46 is greater than 1. Does that mean I can't use figures 6-18A and 6-19A? If not, what would you use?

Thanks a lot,

-Brian
