Applications for direct water cooled PMSM

Applications for direct water cooled PMSM

Hello fellow engs,

I'm in a research group at my Uni and we are driving innovation that will take power density of a PMSM even further. We're in need of information of industrial applications that would benefit from smaller motor or higher power density in general.

Technology is about cooling the winding directly with water or oil (tested with prototype, 100 kW). We have gathered interesting test results with 45 degree Celsius lower running temperature than motor running conventional water jacket cooling. Also we have simulated 40% lower mass and 30% off velocity compared to conventional PMSM (180kW).

I would appreciate your inside information for possible applications which could benefit from smaller motor in size.

RE: Applications for direct water cooled PMSM

Traction motors. That power range is good for light rail (per axle) and also electric road vehicles where the lower mass is likely to be a significant advantage. Scale it up and you're looking at mainline rail traction applications. You'll be competing with GE though, who know a little bit about electric machines...

Traction motors for mining industry.

spindle motors for machine tools.

very large industrial mixers (often motor takes up more floor space than the actual mixer)

RE: Applications for direct water cooled PMSM

About 20 years ago, I read a paper by GE engineers of a new synchronous motor design intended for airplane wing flap control. To keep it small and light for its power capability, they employed liquid cooling of the stator. But the liquid available in an airplane wing is jet fuel, so that was the coolant...

Big utility-class generators run water through the stator bars which are live at 23kV, in a hydrogen gas atmosphere. No scope for that to go wrong then... lookaround
