Duratherm 477 and MP35N

Duratherm 477 and MP35N

(OP)
Hi,

Can anyone please let me know the list of materials that are advanced than Duratherm 477 or MP35N?

I have a small pin which should be made up of Duratherm or MP35N for a particular application. But the pin is bending when it is used in a assembly. There are lot of other reasons why it is bending but we came to a conclusion to change the material of the pin. So is there any nearest material which has slightly good or higher properties than these 2 materials?

Any other suggestions also will be of great help.

Thanks in advance for any help on this regards.

RE: Duratherm 477 and MP35N

In what condition was the MP35N? If it was strain hardened and aged to produce an ultimate tensile strength of 1800 MPa to 2100 MPa (260 ksi to 300 ksi), then your options are few. One potential option is maraging steel, which is available with strength up to 2400 MPa (350 ksi). You can refer to MIL-S-46850D STEEL: BAR, PLATE, SHEET, STRIP, FORGINGS, AND EXTRUSIONS, 18 PERCENT NICKEL ALLOY, MARAGING, 200 KSI, 250 KSI, 300 KSI, AND 350 KSI, HIGH QUALITY.

RE: Duratherm 477 and MP35N

Hello,

I would like to know more about this Duratherm 477 alloy. I guess it's a proprietary grade but cannot find much info on the Internet. Can you address me to any useful source?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Duratherm 477 and MP35N

Thanks metengr.

Let me explain myself better. Since Duratherm 477 is a commercial name, I would like to know the original company who invented (and possibly patented) it.

RE: Duratherm 477 and MP35N

Thanks CoryPad, I also noticed that VACUUMSCHMELZE supplies other Duratherm grades. Maybe 477 is an old one since it is not present in their website, I'll contact them to know more.

RE: Duratherm 477 and MP35N

The only other alloy that I know of in that class is Elgiloy (originally developed by the Elgin watch Co for use in main springs).
But I have to question any design that requires over 300ksi tensile strength.
