I am designing T Pipe Support on 6" thick paving (load at the base: downward 1.00 kip and moment 7.50 kip-ft). How would you calculate a tributary area of paving to resist this load? Thank you very much.

I wouldn’t bother calculating “a tributary area of paving to resist this load.” But, it will provide good lateral resistance at the paving elevation. I would drill or core a hole through the 6" paving and drill a conc. pier, at least for frost cover, which could carry the loads. The loads are not great, so this shouldn’t be a problem. Then extend the conc. pier above the paving enough to cause it to be the impact point for trucks bumpers, cars, forklifts, whatever, and then also carry the “Tee” pipe support structure above. Otherwise, you could have a whole bunch of pipe, with who knows what in it, on someone’s head.

Thanks dhengr. The client wants to use HILTI Epoxy anchors and I trying to evaluate the paving for given load.

Sorry for the confusion - it is concrete paving.

Assuming you are using a steel pedestal pipe support of some type, I would consider that you have two issues:

First is the anchorage of the pedestal. That should be able to resist the moment created by lateral loading either perpendicular, or more commonly, parallel to the pipe.

Second, you need to check shear in the concrete at the loaded perimeter of the pedestal.

This is not a pavement loading issue, but moreso a slab loading issue.

We do a lot of these where I work actually. We usually dowel and epoxy into the slab - mainly for slide-shear and pullout, then pour a larger square concrete pedestal on top of it, which spreads the vertical load in case of punching shear. The pedestal will also add extra weight for overturning resistance.
