Unusual Joist Designation

Unusual Joist Designation

Unusual Joist Designation

(OP)
In the current project we are adding RTU's to the roof of an existing space for a new tenant. We were fortunate enough to get the existing structural drawings but there joist designations were not like anything we had seen in the past.

The engineer called out a specific designation AND provided a joist loading diagram. For example one of the designations was 26KSC2 SP4. The SP4 references us to a joist loading diagram. Have any of you seen anything like this before?

RE: Unusual Joist Designation

I've seen CS designations as in 26KCS for "constant shear" capacity across the span.
Perhaps this is meant along with specific loading?

RE: Unusual Joist Designation

I've seen specs like that quite a bit. I think the engineer selected a joist from the catalogue but is adding the requirement that certain special loads are accommodated by the joist designer. If you can obtain the joist calculations and/or shop drawings, they should document the precise design of the joists together with the individual member sizes. You could also contact a local joist supplier and ask them how they interpret such specs. I know that in the southwest, as building systems have evolved, joist specifications have evolved too to accommodate evolving and special requirements.

Thank you both for your responses.

I've been getting varying answers. I just called Vulcraft to possibly getting some input on this.

Also, this was for the city of Chicago which has a VERY old building code. Not sure if that helps.
