Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe
Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe
(OP)
I am working on a project in which we are running a 24 in pipe from a canal to a firewater pump basin. The client has requested stainless steel pipe. Based on our guidelines the pipe needs to be coated. Can someone recommend the best coating for this application. This is a pipeline company so the typically purchase fusion bonded epoxy carbon steel pipe for pipelins but i don't think it would be easy to find FBE coated SS pipe or if it is economical. I am thinking about specifying a wax paper coating or coal tar epoxy coating instead. It is a relatively short run of pipe ~100 ft. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If there are no plans to apply cathodic protection as well, I would personally take a good look at viscoelastic wrappping materials.

There seemed surprising little long term data on the use of stainless in the ground. Perhaps the most comprehensive research was that from a European funded project "Corrosion resistance of stainless steel in the soil" you can get a copy from http://tinyurl.com/pxlp8fx . I wouldn't have thought applying rules for carbon steel is appropriate witout some modification.
