Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe

Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe

(OP)
I am working on a project in which we are running a 24 in pipe from a canal to a firewater pump basin. The client has requested stainless steel pipe. Based on our guidelines the pipe needs to be coated. Can someone recommend the best coating for this application. This is a pipeline company so the typically purchase fusion bonded epoxy carbon steel pipe for pipelins but i don't think it would be easy to find FBE coated SS pipe or if it is economical. I am thinking about specifying a wax paper coating or coal tar epoxy coating instead. It is a relatively short run of pipe ~100 ft. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe

What is inside your guidelines that requires a stainless pipe to be coated?

The pipe is buried and needs to be coated based on the acidity of the soil

RE: Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe

Consult NACE SP0169 as a starting point.

If there are no plans to apply cathodic protection as well, I would personally take a good look at viscoelastic wrappping materials.

Treat the soil with lime as you bury the pipe. Don't coat it.

RE: Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe

I recently looked into the use buried stainless for use on bridge, the steel would be buried in a large garden, see:

https://www.gardenbridge.london/

There seemed surprising little long term data on the use of stainless in the ground. Perhaps the most comprehensive research was that from a European funded project "Corrosion resistance of stainless steel in the soil" you can get a copy from http://tinyurl.com/pxlp8fx . I wouldn't have thought applying rules for carbon steel is appropriate witout some modification.

RE: Coating of Stainless Steel Pipe

If it need to be buried, then be sure to coat it or do CP. Best solution is to either to do a High build 2 pack epoxy coating, or Wrapping.
