book for design of welded structures

(OP)
Hi. I'm trying to find a book that covers design ideas for welded structures. I'm tending to design more and more fabrications and sometimes I struggle to think of the best way to design a joint, interface, frame etc.

Ideally a book with plenty of illustrations/pictures.

Anyone know of such a book?

Thanks

Thanks, but neither are what I'm after. I don't need a book detailing the theory of welding. I need a book that can help me design welded structures and joints. A book that will give me ideas on a neat and material/weld efficient way of designing a framework, for instance.

RE: book for design of welded structures

There is one book that is a must-have for this topic: Design of Welded Structures by Omer Blodgett.

It may still be available from the Lincoln Foundation, but I wasn't able to find a link. Here is one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Design-Welded-Structures-Ome...

Thanks for that recommendation, and thanks for the scribd link. I'll have a look through.

I've also come across Blodgett's Design of Weldments. As a mechanical engineer this sounds more appropriate. Would you agree? It's also on scribd so I'll have a look through.

I've seen them both on the lincoln foundation for $22 and $15 respectively. A bargain except the shipping for me in the UK is $86!! Oh well, I may just have to go for it ...

RE: book for design of welded structures

I snap pics of steel details on my cell phone where ever I go. I've been thinking of throwing them and other machine details on to google keep using a new account and sharing it out.

But yeah, keep your eyes open and snap pics of the roof while other people are watching the basketball game.

Don't be afraid to talk to shop guys, they've seen a lot, and know what works for them.

As far as a collection of ideas, there is a related thread in this forum

Omer Blodgett's book 'Design of Weldments' is fantastic to the extent that I have used it, and at $25, a super deal.

Blodgett, hands down.

Just ordered both Blodgett books from Lincoln. I'm sure they'll be a good investment. Thanks for all the advice.

RE: book for design of welded structures

My copies have impressively high quality binding, and the pages have barely yellowed where other books of that vintge have turned to parchment.

This one sounds interesting too, although I'm guessing a lot of it was harvested from "Design of weldments".

Available tooling makes a big difference too. Once place I worked had a 40' CNC plasma table and could brake up to 1/2" plate X 12' long, I think. The plasma table made complex shapes with precision essentially free, in combination with a precise brake, we could make folded parts with tab a slot locating fits. One example is a 2" X 2" angle with a drilled hole pattern could be replaced by bent HRS with precise enough and smooth enough burned holes.

RE: book for design of welded structures

Lincoln has a good library of books, I bought a whole box of them including Blodgett and several others, to replace old and worn versions I had been using for decades.

Does anyone know whether the text of 'solutions to design of weldments' book is fully included 'design of weldments'?

Hi all. Just to let you know that I've bought both Design of Welded Structures and the Design of Weldments. Having flicked through them both I think the Design of Weldments is probably more applicable to my line of work (mechanical engineering, machine design etc). It also seems a better book for design ideas.
