Wood structures without a shear wall one One side
Wood structures without a shear wall one One side
(OP)
There used to be a clause 9.6.4 in CSA O86.1,headed "Structures without a shearwall on One Side", and an accompanying Figure 9.6.4 showing his, but these do not seem to be in the latest (2009) edition. Does anyone know if the provision was deleted, or just moved to somewhere else in the Standard?
It used to say that if the structure was lacking a shear wall on one side only, then the "diaphragm supported by the remaining walls shall be sheathed with diagonal boards or plywood, OSB or waferboard". For the existing cottage that I am reviewing, there is no sheathing on the exterior face, only vinyl siding on the exterior face and gypsum board on the interior face of the walls. This clause would have precluded the wall from being considered as a shear wall because gypsum board is not in the list of accepted sheathing materials for this condition.

Don't know about the CSA requirements, but there have been a lot of discussions on three sided wood diaphragms in the forum here. Did you check any of those strings to see if they might help yet?
