Waffle Slab - slab reinforcement

Waffle Slab - slab reinforcement

Waffle Slab - slab reinforcement

(OP)
Has anyone out there designed and constructed reinforced concrete waffle slabs? I did at least one in the late 1970's but I cannot remember if mesh was specified for the 2½" thick slab. A recent preliminary covermeter investigation of a waffle slab built in the 1950's did not find any metal in the slab, but the slab is not generally cracked or indicating any structural distress, so perhaps the covermeter just failed to find it. The CRSI handbook of 1963 does not mention anything about mesh in the slab. I don't have the most recent CRSI handbook. On the other hand, I know that we did specify mesh for the slab where one-way joists were used in buildings. I would expect that mesh should be provided in the 2.5" slab because the Code does not allow unreinforced concrete in a floor slab. We will find out for sure when the slab is broken out as part of the upcoming repairs, but I am interested in what anyone out there knows about what was (and is currently) done.

RE: Waffle Slab - slab reinforcement

I don't remember, either. But for waffle plates, the typical slab thickness was either 3" or 4.5". For 2.5" slabs, as we used to use over bar joists, the numbers with mesh never did work out, but the slabs performed reasonably well. They probably work more as flat arches than as flexural slabs.

yes possibly they work as arches
