Staggered weld stud pattern?

Staggered weld stud pattern?

Staggered weld stud pattern?

(OP)
Hello,

Quick question about weld stud staggering for a wood nailer to HSS. If the plans say "HSS10X5 w/ 2 ROWS, 5/8" WELD STUD @ 24" OC STAGGERED" does this mean that within each row the studs are 24" OC, ultimatley making them 12" oc when the rows are staggered (so from the first stud in the top row to the first stud in the bottom row its 12" oc)? Or does it imply that the studs are 24" oc between staggered bolts (so from the first stud in the top row to the first stud in the bottom row its 24" oc) making the studs in each row actually 48" oc? My god, Ive over thought this.

Thanks
Joe

RE: Staggered weld stud pattern?

I vote for effectively 12" oc. This comes up more often than you'd think. Nowadays, I include a little inset detail of the stud layout in plan. It takes 30s and saves RFI's

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Staggered weld stud pattern?

Agree with KootK. If they were at 24", staggered, there would be no reason to say "2 rows".

RE: Staggered weld stud pattern?

I read it the opposite way, at 24" overall but staggered into two rows.

If in doubt more is better?

RE: Staggered weld stud pattern?

I agree with KootK and Hokie66. And I think that grammar -- such as it exists in engineering documents -- requires it. This statement, "HSS10X5 w/ 2 ROWS, 5/8" WELD STUD @ 24" OC STAGGERED" calls for two rows of studs at 24" on center. The fact that they're staggered is simply additional information.
