Abaqus XFEM crack location

Abaqus XFEM crack location

Hello all,

I am a somewhat experienced Abaqus user but utterly new to XFEM or damage mechanics in general. My goal is to model rupture of a pressurized membrane. For that I decided to use XFEM capability of Abaqus. I have managed to make a simple model of a plate rupture under axial loading. The problem is that, in definition of crack parameters, I have to define the crack location, otherwise I will get errors like this:

"The damage model has to be specified for enriched element 1 instance part-1-1 since there is no initial crack in the enriched region".

My goal is to get the crack started where I have maximal stresses. How should I approach this?

Sorry if my question sounds stupid and many thanks in advance.

Max

RE: Abaqus XFEM crack location

Run a model without any enriched elements and look for the elements with the highest Von Mises stresses. Enrich those elements for the XFEM run.
