Dear friends,

Suppose that a welder is qualified for 6010 (f no.3) for root pass and 7018 (f no.4) for filling and cap.
Is he qualified for 7016 (f no.4) for root pass?
because as per AWS D1.1 2010 table 4.12, f number higher than WPQR f number is essential. but on the other hand, he had the test with 7018 which is f no. 4 !
Shall I mention in welder certificate that he can weld F no.3 for root pass and F4 for filling and cap. Or he can weld F no.4 for all weld?

For ASME IX a welder qualifying E7018 hot and fill passes is qualified F1 to F4 WITH backing only. Therefore, unless the joint has backing, the welder cannot use E7016 for the root pass. This is similar to Table 4.12 in AWS D1.1 where the deletion of backing is an essential variable change requiring requalification.

A far as the documentation is concerned, it is cleaner to list the qualified ranges. It can be as simple as:

F3: with/without backing
F1-F4: with backing only

or, if you desire,

E6010 with/without backing
E7016/E7018 with backing only

The first example is better as it is less restrictive because it does not mention the specific electrode..

Apologies for missing the last sentence regarding whether or not the welder could make a complete weld with F4 consumables.

A change from one F Number to another F Number constitutes an essential variable (ASME Section IX, QW 353 and QW 404.15). Using a hypothetical where a 0.450" plate was welded with an E6010 weld thickness of 0.125" and E7018" remainder (0.325"), the welder would be limited to 2 times the weld thickness [t] (ASME IX, QW 452.1(a) for each electrode. Therefore, the welder would be limited to weld 0.250" with E6010, and 0.650" with E7018.

So the answer could be 'yes' a welder could make an all E7018 weld if the plate thickness is within the range of their qualification (0.650"), backing was used, and this thickness was in the range specified on the qualified WPS.

Finally, the position and diameter (if qualified on piping) the welder was qualified on will create further restrictions, and would need be appropriate for the WPS to be used. The ability to use an E7018 in certain positions will add to the functional limits.
