Is an atmospheric furnance suited for the following steels.

(OP)
Dear mates:
I want to know if an atmospheric furnance is suited for the heat traetment of the following steels:
D2
4140
1018
O1
4140
8620
4140
D2
H3
D1
9840
8620
1518
O1
A36
4140
9840
S7
That information is very important because a vacuum furnance is very expensive
I hope for your words
Kind regards Marco Uscanga

Yes

RE: Is an atmospheric furnance suited for the following steels.

It takes careful control of carbon potential to prevent too much de-carb of the surfaces.
Look into the details of carbon potential control.
This list of alloys covers a very wide range of C levels and the same approach will not be optimal for all of them.

Hi Many of my possible customers require 50-60 HRC for michining their metal parts. I want to view more the topic of "the same approach will not be optimal for all of them" What is the suited approach for each of the steels?

I hope for your comments

Kind regards

will the problem be fixed just with a carbon potential control system?

The furnace atmosphere carbon potential is controlled via fuel source. Examples include nitrogen-methanol from tanks, or natural gas endothermic generators. These are all straightforward considerations for heat treating. Use reputable heat treatment vendors, or if you are installing your own equipment, then work with reputable furnace suppliers.
