RE: Joint tunnel and station box in underground structure

Why are you specifically concerned with this joint? Is it water infiltration after movement?

hi Voyage.

We are interested in the joint detail between them. how should we treat it?
yes you are right, to mitigate the effect after earthquake.
As you may know, the structure stiffness (stiffness of station >>> stiffness of tunnel)change drastically in this joint.

RE: Joint tunnel and station box in underground structure

This can be detailed as a male-female type fitting connection, not too snug, with a joint gap compressible fill (waterstop) that allows for any anticipated movements such as rotations. If the relative movements are too large then you will have to expect transverse shears to transfer from section to section and thus the ends should be designed for this.

hi VoD,

thanks for your info. Looks I got a good answer to my client.
This means that I need to model it and see the behaviour, right? have you tried model it before?
