Good Morning:

I have to do a wps for the STEEL A709 GR 50, under asme IX, but this material is not in QW-422.

The A572 Gr. 50 HAVE THE SAME COMPOSITION that A709 gr 50, the question is if can i use to the PQR the steel A36, BECAUSE IS THE SAME Pn° y Gr. N° that A572? or that is a big mistake.

Thank for your answer

See you

RE: WPS A 709 Gr. 50

No. The ASTM A709 would be considered an unassigned base material for the WPS. One cannot arbitrarily assign base material P-Nos.

Thank you Metengr

But when i compare the composition and mechanics propierties of A572 AND A709 are the same.

JATE
Even after review of NonMandatory Appendix D in Section IX, there is no currently assigned P-No for this material. There is for A 572 and A 36 for the same strength grades. Until one is assigned by Section IX, the WPS will require qualification using A 709 base material.

You can try using dual certified material (A 36/A709), but this will require purchase of dual certified material so just use A709.

Thank for your time, but i have a last question, for the welder qualification, can we use the A36 OR a572?

RE: WPS A 709 Gr. 50

You can use either base material for welder performance qualification.
