Qualified thickness of nozzle to shell with pad (ASME Sec IX)

Qualified thickness of nozzle to shell with pad (ASME Sec IX)

Qualified thickness of nozzle to shell with pad (ASME Sec IX)

(OP)
Consider a nozzle to shell attachment detail with re-pad as below sketch.

Both nozzle to pad and nozzle to shell welds are full penetration. In this sketch:
1- for re-pad to nozzle weld joint: Both t1 & t2 shall be qualified as per ASME Sec IX
2- for shell to nozzle weld joint: Both t1 & t3 shall be qualified as per ASME sec IX

I was wondering if these two joints could be behaved as one joint? in fact, is it required that the total thickness of base metal or the deposited weld metal (i.e. t2+t3) to be qualified or not.

RE: Qualified thickness of nozzle to shell with pad (ASME Sec IX)

It's a corner weld, meaning its a single process from one side and you need to qualify your guy for that shell thickness which is easy to do at a 1/2" test. Should be good to backgouge and fill the remainder up with a heavy wall ticket.
