Can you lead me to a publication or web site that would define the proper pole size, in class, for various transformer sizes? Thank you, Gary

Thank you for you quick response to my question. I cannot yet locate the appropriate page, table or chart in bulletin 160-2. Could you tell me what page I might be able to find the recommended pole class sizes for various transformers? Regards, Gary

RE: pole size for pole-type transformers

Gary,
The NRECA Simplified Staking Manual for Overhead Distribution Lines has two tables on pages 75 and 76 with recomended minimum pole sizes for  transformers installed on a single pole.  For example, they recommend a minimum of class 3 for three 50 kVA transformers.  I don't recall RUS bulletin 160-2 having a table, it just presents the methods to calculate pole size.  In short, the pole size is a function of transformer weight and other stuff attached to the pole, and wind loading on the pole, transformer, wires and other stuff attached to the pole.  Please let me know if you need more info.

This would be the ideal document for my needs.  I have attempted to locate a copy of the “NRECA Simplified Staking Manual for Overhead Distribution Lines” for purchase without luck so far.  Would you know where a copy of this publication could be purchased in paper or pdf form?  Thank you for your practical and detailed help.  Regards, Gary

RE: pole size for pole-type transformers

You can contact the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association at www.nreca.org or 703-907-5500.  The Southern Engineering Company at 404-352-9200 prepared the book under contract to NRECA.  I don't know how distibution of the book is handled.

Mike, thank you for your time and assistance. I know the Simplified Staking Manual is the publication I need. As of now I have not been successful in obtaining the manual, but am sure there will be a way.  Best wishes, Gary
