Wye motor in delta power system

Wye motor in delta power system

Wye motor in delta power system

(OP)
I've supplied several motors on a project (in USA) that utilizes a delta power system. Most/all of my low hp motors appear to be wye wound. The client believes all motors must be delta wound for use in a delta power system.

Their reasoning is that when a wye only wound motor is connected to a delta power source, it carries only 67% voltage across the winding, providing less horsepower. Under full load operation, the motor is more likely to fail.

Can a wye wound motor can be used in a delta power supply? Why or why not? Thank you.

RE: Wye motor in delta power system

As long as the rated phase-phase voltage is correct there is no difference between how a wye wound motor and a delta wound motor would respond to the power system.

Thank you. A follow-up question about grounding:

I'm told my client will accept wye wound motors where the motor winding is not grounded. Isn't this inherent to wye wound motors? Are there problems using a wye wound motor with grounded winding in a delta power system?

RE: Wye motor in delta power system

A grounded winding would be an odd duck; that's pretty much never done.

RE: Wye motor in delta power system

You are confusing POWER SYSTEM configurations with MOTOR WINDING configurations. Apples and oranges.

OK, maybe lemons and oranges... same genus, different species.
